Rats are members of the genus Rattus, the most common spices found in Hong Kong are:
Brown rat ,aka Norway rat; commonly found in sewers, lower-levels or burrows.
Black rat ,aka ship rat, commonly found in higher levels, roof interspaces, pipes or grooves.
House mouse are commonly founded in roof interspaces, furniture, storage places or places associated with human.
Characteristics of Rats
Rats are omnivore, with daily consumption of around 15g to 30g food and water to survive. Rats come with long tentacles and fur covering their body; they have excellent auditory and olfactory senses that could help them to identify food sources. Rats also have good balance and jumping ability that they can reach up to a meter.
Rats carry other insects (such as louse and tick) and deadly diseases around, viruses will be left on their excreta that could infect our food and water sources; also if human got bitten by rats, it will lead to serious illness, such as Lassa fever, bubonic plague, leptospirosis and Hantavirus infection.

What actions to take?
To improve living condition by clearing out stacks of junk items; also, use a bin with a lid and clear the rubbish everyday. Storage rooms require regular cleaning.
Barricade the rats’ tunnels to prevent rats’ intervention.
Place mousetrap and rat cage.
- Place rat bait to terminate rats. Rat bait is divided into 2 kinds: rat poison and rat wax, both of them are chronic anticoagulant drug that will kill rats from inside. They won’t cause immediate death to rats but with the slow internal bleeding.
- If rat’s corpse is founded, do not pick it up with bare hand; always wear plastic gloves and wrap it up in plastic bag to throw it away. Use disinfectants to clean the area completely.
